More than half of UK businesses perceive lack for government support on recycling

Over half (53%) of UK businesses say they get minimal or no government support on recycling, reveals a new study by Rubbermaid Commercial Products (RCP). The report, The Changing Face of Commercial Recycling in the UK, also shows that 60% of UK businesses feel a lack of government incentives is a factor in not recycling more.

The report is based on a survey of 800 businesses across Europe, which was also used to produce a report on continental Europe, The Changing Face of Commercial Recycling in Europe. Other key findings include that 99% of UK businesses expect the government to provide increased education for businesses, incentives to drive more recycling, and sanctions for companies that do little. Nearly half (43%) of UK companies also cite a lack of shareholder engagement as a reason for not recycling more, while 49% see cost as a barrier.

However, the vast majority of UK respondents believe commercial recycling will become more important for UK businesses in the future (95%), that their spending on recycling will increase (93%), and that more efficient businesses recycle more waste (94%). Almost all UK businesses (93%) agree that smarter recycling can reduce operational costs.
